Pianos are beautiful and expensive musical instruments that require special care and attention, especially when it comes to storage. Whether you're moving to a new home or simply need to put your piano away for a while, it's important to know how to properly store it to prevent damage and ensure it stays in great condition.

The first thing to consider is the environment in which you'll be storing your piano. Pianos are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, so it's best to keep them in a climate-controlled space. Ideally, the temperature should be between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity level should be between 40% and 50%. Avoid storing your piano in areas with extreme temperature changes, such as basements or attics. If the temperature is too high, it can cause the wood to warp and the glue joints to weaken. If the temperature is too low, the soundboard and other components can become brittle, which can lead to cracks and other damage. High humidity can cause the wood to swell, which can affect the tuning stability and the action of the piano, while low humidity can cause the wood to shrink, which can also lead to cracking and other damage.

Once you've found the right space, it's important to prepare your piano for storage. First, make sure it's clean and free of dust and debris. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the keys and other surfaces, and use a vacuum or compressed air to remove any dust or debris that may have accumulated inside the piano.

Next, it's important to protect the piano's finish. We cover the piano with a soft, breathable cloth to prevent scratches and other damage.

Finally, it's important to properly secure the piano for storage. If you're storing the piano upright, make sure it's on a level surface and use a piano dolly or caster cups to prevent it from moving or rolling. If you're storing the piano on its side or back, use a specialized piano board or cradle to prevent damage to the internal components.

In addition to these basic steps, there are a few other things to keep in mind when storing your piano. If you're storing it for an extended period of time, it's a good idea to have it serviced by a professional piano technician before and after storage. This can help ensure that the piano is in good condition and ready to play when you take it out of storage.

Overall, proper piano storage is essential to maintaining the beauty and functionality of your instrument. By following these simple steps, you can protect your piano and ensure that it brings you joy for years to come.

Piano Damage (due to improper storing)

Pianos are delicate instruments that require special care and attention to maintain their quality and longevity. One crucial aspect of piano care is ensuring that they are stored in a climate-controlled environment.

Unfortunately, many people don't realize the damaging effects of storing pianos in non-climate-controlled environments until it's too late.

The images below serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of storing a piano in an unsuitable location. In the first image, we see a piano that has been left in a damp and humid area. The moisture in the air has caused the wood to swell and warp, resulting in damage to the soundboard and the keys. The piano will require extensive repairs, and in some cases, the damage may be irreparable.

In the second image, we see a piano that has been stored in a dry and dusty environment. The lack of humidity has caused the wood to dry out, leading to cracks and splits. Dust and debris have accumulated on the keys and inside the piano, potentially causing damage to the strings and other components.

These images demonstrate that storing a piano in a non-climate-controlled environment can have disastrous consequences. To avoid damage to your piano, it is essential to store it in an area with stable temperature and humidity levels. This will help to maintain the integrity of the wood, prevent warping, and protect the delicate components of the instrument.

If you are unsure of how to properly store your piano, consult with a professional piano mover or technician. They can advise you on the best practices for storing your piano and help ensure that it remains in top condition for years to come. Remember, proper care and maintenance are key to preserving the quality and value of your piano.

"How much does it cost to store my piano?"

Piano storage is a 3 part process. Pick up, storage and the return or release.

Pick up cost: The price to pick up will depend on the type of piano, size and if there are any flights of stairs vs ground level or elevator access.

Storage cost: The price to store your piano is based on the the size and duration of storage. For example, a spinet upright takes up less space than a concert grand piano and will therefore cost more to store. We offer discounted rates if you pre-pay your long term storage. For more info, view the rates below or give us a call for an exact quote.

Return/Release: Depending on the new address, the price will vary based on distance, stairs etc... If it is being returned to the original location, the cost will be less than the pick up cost.
